You probably are familiar with the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are just as bad since they are extremely inquisitive and known for going places and getting into circumstances that they shouldn't. While this doesn't always end badly, they often do end up hurting themselves somehow so it's a wise decision to be familiar with some dog first aid.

Around the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she managed to find a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and made up her mind to play there for awhile. By the time she came back inside the house the burrs had worked their way firmly into places on her face, her ears and her little behind.

It was late so the Vet was closed and a visit to the animal hospital would definitely have been very expensive. So she endured my tearful yet laughing efforts as I was able to one by one manipulate those burrs out of her hair as she resisted and yelped for more than two hours. They were matted so badly and right next to the skin that cutting them out was not possible.

A tranquilizer of some sort would have been nice to have but I didn't have anything for her. Because there was no blood or severe injury, making a trip to the emergency hospital was a choice ... that time.

That is a sad yet amusing story to describe and hopefully an experience she has forgotten over the years. It was also a minor thing although painful and stressful for both of us. But it might have been more serious.

As a responsible pet owner you should certainly know at least basic first aid for dogs so you can be prepared for more serious emergencies. You can often save on Vet charges for minor problems like the one I had. But you may possibly need to be able to help ease your canine's pain or engage in life-saving actions until you can get to the Vet.

Having a dog first aid kit is definitely a good thing but you also have to know how to handle things in an actual emergency. Always keep phone numbers handy for both your regular Vet as well as the local animal emergency hospital. And learn basic canine first aid yourself.
